Welcome to the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldier
 
This site is designed to increase the public knowledge on African American contribution in the settlement of the western frontier. The legacy of the Buffalo Soldier told by a descendent of a Buffalo Soldier would emphasize the history of the 9th Cavalry and 24th Infantry Regiment. We hope this site will bring a better understanding about the Buffalo Soldiers, the contributions and accomplishment during the Indian War period, and the contributions made by African American settlers during the 1800”s. “Slavery to Glory”
  
 
   
   
 
Buffalo Soldier
   

On August 3, 1866, Gen. Phillip Sheridan, commander of the Military Division of the Gulf, was authorized to raise one regiment of "colored" cavalry that was to be designated the 9th Regiment.
     
   
 
Black Cowboy
    A few black cowboys gained some notoriety. Few people would have known about Bose Ikard, had it not been for the television mini-series, "Lonesome Dove."
       
     
   
  The Black Female Buffalo Soldier
    On November 15, 1866 Cathay Williams became a soldier. Whatever her motivations in joining the army, she may not have realized she was setting a precedent.
       
     
 
   
  Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts
   

The Medal of Honor, this nation's highest honor for valor, was awarded to four Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts. Buffalo Soldier Regimental returns show that after twelve engagements and twenty expeditions.

Throughout American history, the longest and most consistent contact between American Indians and peoples of African descent occurred among those tribes that the federal government designated as the Five Civilized Tribes.
